北村(cun)郑苏仙,一(yi)(yi)(yi)日梦至(zhi)(zhi)冥(ming)府,见(jian)闫罗王方录囚。有(you)邻村(cun)一(yi)(yi)(yi)媪(ao)至(zhi)(zhi)殿前,王改容(rong)拱手,赐以(yi)杯茗(ming),命冥(ming)吏速(su)送(song)生善处(chu)。郑私(si)(si)(si)叩(kou)冥(ming)吏曰(yue):此(ci)(ci)农(nong)家老妇(fu),有(you)何功德?冥(ming)吏曰(yue):是媪(ao)一(yi)(yi)(yi)生无(wu)(wu)利(li)己(ji)损人心。夫利(li)己(ji)之(zhi)(zhi)心,虽(sui)(sui)贤士大(da)夫或不免,然(ran)利(li)己(ji)者必损人,种(zhong)种(zhong)机械因是而生,种(zhong)种(zhong)冤愆因是而造(zao),甚(shen)至(zhi)(zhi)贻臭(chou)万年,流(liu)毒四(si)诲,皆此(ci)(ci)一(yi)(yi)(yi)念(nian)为(wei)害也(ye)。此(ci)(ci)一(yi)(yi)(yi)村(cun)妇(fu)而能自制其(qi)私(si)(si)(si)心,读书讲学之(zhi)(zhi)儒对(dui)之(zhi)(zhi)多愧色矣。何怪(guai)王之(zhi)(zhi)加礼乎?郑素(su)有(you)心计,闻之(zhi)(zhi)惕然(ran)而寤。郑又言(yan)此(ci)(ci)媪(ao)未至(zhi)(zhi)以(yi)前,有(you)一(yi)(yi)(yi)官(guan)公(gong)(gong)(gong)服昂然(ran)入,自称所至(zhi)(zhi)但饮一(yi)(yi)(yi)杯水(shui),今无(wu)(wu)愧鬼(gui)神。王哂曰(yue):设官(guan)以(yi)治民(min),下至(zhi)(zhi)驿丞闸官(guan),皆有(you)利(li)弊(bi)之(zhi)(zhi)当理,但不要(yao)钱即(ji)为(wei)好官(guan),植木偶于(yu)堂,并水(shui)不饮,不更(geng)胜(sheng)公(gong)(gong)(gong)乎?官(guan)又辩曰(yue):某虽(sui)(sui)无(wu)(wu)功亦无(wu)(wu)罪。王曰(yue):公(gong)(gong)(gong)一(yi)(yi)(yi)身处(chu)处(chu)求自全(quan),某狱某狱避嫌疑而不言(yan),非负民(min)乎?某事(shi)(shi)某事(shi)(shi)畏(wei)烦重(zhong)而不举,非负国(guo)乎?三载考绩之(zhi)(zhi)谓何,无(wu)(wu)功即(ji)有(you)罪矣。官(guan)大(da)踧踖(ji),锋棱顿减。王徐顾笑曰(yue):怪(guai)公(gong)(gong)(gong)盛(sheng)气耳,平心而论,要(yao)是三四(si)等好官(guan),来生尚不失冠(guan)带(dai)。促命即(ji)送(song)转轮王。观此(ci)(ci)二(er)事(shi)(shi),知人心微暧(ai),鬼(gui)神皆得而窥。虽(sui)(sui)贤者一(yi)(yi)(yi)念(nian)之(zhi)(zhi)私(si)(si)(si),亦不免于(yu)责备。相在尔室,其(qi)信然(ran)乎?
雍(yong)正壬子有(you)宦家子妇,素无勃谿状。突(tu)狂(kuang)电穿牖,如火光激(ji)射,雷楔贯(guan)心(xin)而(er)入,洞(dong)左胁而(er)出(chu),其夫亦为(wei)雷焰(yan)燔烧,背到(dao)尻皆焦黑,气息仅属,久之(zhi)乃苏,顾妇尸泣曰(yue):我性刚劲,与母争论或有(you)之(zhi);尔不过私诉抑郁(yu),背灯掩泪而(er)已,何(he)雷之(zhi)误中尔耶?是未知律重主(zhu)谋,幽明一也。
无(wu)云和尚,不(bu)知何许人。康熙中挂单河(he)间资胜(sheng)寺,终日(ri)默坐(zuo),与语亦不(bu)答。一日(ri)忽(hu)登禅(shan)床(chuang),以(yi)界尺拍案一声,泊(bo)然化去(qu)。视案上(shang)有偈(jie)曰(yue):削发辞家(jia)(jia)净六(liu)尘,自(zi)家(jia)(jia)且了自(zi)家(jia)(jia)身,仁民爱物无(wu)穷事,原有周公孔圣(sheng)人,佛法近(jin)墨,此僧乃近(jin)于杨。
宁波吴(wu)生,好作北(bei)里(li)游。后昵一(yi)狐(hu)(hu)女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv),时相幽(you)会。然仍出入青楼间(jian)。一(yi)日(ri)狐(hu)(hu)女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv)请曰(yue):吾(wu)能幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua),凡君所(suo)眷,吾(wu)一(yi)见即(ji)可(ke)肖(xiao)其貌。君一(yi)存想,应念(nian)而至,不(bu)(bu)逾于黄(huang)金买笑乎(hu)?试之,果倾刻换(huan)形,与(yu)真无二,遂(sui)不(bu)(bu)复外出。尝(chang)与(yu)狐(hu)(hu)女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv)曰(yue):眠(mian)花藉柳,实惬人心,惜是幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua),意中终隔一(yi)膜耳(er)。狐(hu)(hu)女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv)曰(yue):不(bu)(bu)然,声(sheng)色之娱,本(ben)雷光石火,岂(qi)特吾(wu)肖(xiao)某(mou)(mou)某(mou)(mou)为(wei)(wei)幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua),即(ji)彼某(mou)(mou)某(mou)(mou)亦幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua)也(ye)(ye)。岂(qi)特某(mou)(mou)某(mou)(mou)为(wei)(wei)幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua),即(ji)妾亦幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua)也(ye)(ye)。即(ji)千百年来名(ming)姬(ji)艳女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv)皆幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua)也(ye)(ye)。白杨绿草,黄(huang)土青山(shan),何一(yi)非(fei)古(gu)来歌舞(wu)之场;握雨携云,与(yu)埋香葬玉,别鹤、离鸾,一(yi)曲(qu)伸臂顷耳(er),中间(jian)两(liang)美相合(he),或以(yi)时刻计(ji)(ji),或以(yi)日(ri)计(ji)(ji),或以(yi)月计(ji)(ji),或以(yi)年计(ji)(ji),终有绝别之期;及其诀别,则(ze)数十年而散,与(yu)片(pian)刻暂遇而散者(zhe),同一(yi)悬崖(ya)撒手,转瞬成空(kong)。倚翠(cui)偎红,不(bu)(bu)皆恍如春梦乎(hu)?即(ji)夙契原深,终身聚首,而朱颜不(bu)(bu)驻,白发已侵,一(yi)人之身,非(fei)复旧态(tai)。则(ze)当时黛眉粉颊(jia),亦谓(wei)之幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua)可(ke)矣。何独以(yi)妾肖(xiao)某(mou)(mou)某(mou)(mou)为(wei)(wei)幻(huan)(huan)(huan)化(hua)(hua)也(ye)(ye)?吴(wu)洒然有悟(wu)。后数岁,狐(hu)(hu)女(nv)(nv)(nv)(nv)辞去,吴(wu)竟绝迹于狎游。
交河及孺爱,青县张文甫,皆(jie)老(lao)儒(ru)(ru)也。并授徒于(yu)献。尝同(tong)步月南村北村之间,去(qu)馆稍远(yuan),荒(huang)原(yuan)阒寂,榛(zhen)莽翳然。张心(xin)怖(bu)欲返(fan),曰:墟墓间多(duo)鬼,曷可久留(liu)。俄一老(lao)人(ren)扶(fu)杖(zhang)至,揖二(er)人(ren)坐,曰:世(shi)间何得有鬼,不闻阮瞻之论(lun)乎?二(er)君儒(ru)(ru)者,奈何信释氏之妖(yao)妄。因阐发程朱(zhu)二(er)气屈伸之理(li),疏通证明,词条流畅,二(er)人(ren)听之皆(jie)首肯,共叹宋儒(ru)(ru)见(jian)理(li)之真(zhen),递相(xiang)酬对(dui)。竟忘(wang)问姓名。适大车(che)数辆远(yuan)远(yuan)至,牛铎铮然,老(lao)人(ren)振(zhen)衣急(ji)起曰:泉下之人(ren),岑寂久矣。不持(chi)无(wu)鬼之论(lun),不能留(liu)二(er)君作竟夕谈。今将(jiang)别,谨(jin)以实告,毋(wu)讶相(xiang)戏侮也。俯仰之顷,欻然已灭,是间绝少文士,惟董(dong)空如先生(sheng)墓相(xiang)近,或即(ji)其(qi)魂欤(yu)。
河间唐(tang)(tang)(tang)生,好戏(xi)侮,土人(ren)(ren)至今(jin)能(neng)道之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。所谓唐(tang)(tang)(tang)啸子者(zhe)是(shi)(shi)也。有塾(shu)师(shi)好讲(jiang)无鬼,尝曰(yue):阮瞻遇鬼,安有是(shi)(shi)事(shi)?僧徒妄造蜚(fei)语耳。唐(tang)(tang)(tang)夜洒土其(qi)窗,而(er)呜呜击其(qi)户(hu),塾(shu)师(shi)骇问为谁,则曰(yue):我二气(qi)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)良能(neng)也。塾(shu)师(shi)大(da)怖,蒙(meng)首股栗,使二弟子宋达旦,次日委顿不起。朋友(you)来问,但呻吟曰(yue)有鬼。既而(er)知唐(tang)(tang)(tang)所为,莫不拊(fu)掌。然自(zi)是(shi)(shi)魅(mei)大(da)作,抛掷瓦石,摇撼(han)户(hu)牖无虚夕(xi)。初尚以(yi)为唐(tang)(tang)(tang)再(zai)来,细察之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)乃真魅(mei),不胜(sheng)其(qi)嬲,竟弃馆而(er)去。盖震(zhen)惧之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)后(hou),益以(yi)惭恧,其(qi)气(qi)已馁,狐乘其(qi)馁而(er)中之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)也。妖由(you)人(ren)(ren)兴,此之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)谓乎(hu)?
天津某(mou)(mou)孝廉,与数友郊(jiao)外踏青。皆(jie)少年轻薄,见柳(liu)荫(yin)中(zhong)少妇(fu)(fu)骑驴(lv)过,欺其无伴,邀(yao)众逐(zhu)其后,嫚语调(diao)谑(xue)。少妇(fu)(fu)殊不答,鞭驴(lv)疾行(xing)。有(you)两三(san)人(ren)(ren)先(xian)追及(ji),少妇(fu)(fu)忽(hu)下驴(lv)软语,意似相悦(yue)。俄某(mou)(mou)与三(san)四(si)人(ren)(ren)追及(ji),审(shen)视正其妻也。但妻不解骑,是日亦无由(you)至郊(jiao)外,且疑(yi)且怒(nu),近前(qian)诃(he)之(zhi)。妻嬉笑如(ru)故(gu),某(mou)(mou)愤气潮(chao)涌,奋掌欲掴其面,妻忽(hu)飞跨驴(lv)背,别换一(yi)形,以鞭指(zhi)某(mou)(mou)数曰:见他(ta)人(ren)(ren)之(zhi)妇(fu)(fu),则狎亵百端;见自己妇(fu)(fu),则恚(hui)恨如(ru)是,尔读圣贤书,一(yi)恕字尚不能解,何以挂(gua)名桂籍(ji)也。数讫,径行(xing)。某(mou)(mou)色如(ru)死灰,殆僵(jiang)立道左(zuo)不能去,竟不知是何魅也。
德州田白岩(yan)曰:有额都(dou)统者(zhe),在(zai)滇黔间(jian)山行,见道(dao)士(shi)按(an)一(yi)丽女(nv)(nv)于石,欲剖(pou)其(qi)(qi)心(xin),女(nv)(nv)哀呼乞救,额急挥(hui)骑驰(chi)及(ji),遽格道(dao)士(shi)手,女(nv)(nv)噭然一(yi)声(sheng),化火(huo)光飞去(qu),道(dao)士(shi)顿足(zu)曰:公败吾事!此(ci)魅(mei)已媚杀(sha)百(bai)余人,故(gu)捕诛之(zhi)以除害,但(dan)取精已多,岁久通灵,斩其(qi)(qi)首则神遁去(qu),故(gu)必剖(pou)其(qi)(qi)心(xin)乃(nai)死,公今纵(zong)之(zhi),又贻患无穷矣。惜一(yi)猛(meng)虎之(zhi)命,放置深山,不(bu)知泽(ze)麋林鹿,劘其(qi)(qi)牙者(zhe)几许命也(ye)!匣(xia)其(qi)(qi)匕(bi)首,恨恨渡溪去(qu),此(ci)贻白岩(yan)之(zhi)寓言(yan),即所谓一(yi)家哭何如一(yi)路(lu)哭也(ye)。姑容墨吏,自(zi)以为陰功,人亦(yi)多称为忠(zhong)厚。而穷民之(zhi)卖儿(er)贴妇,皆未一(yi)思(si),亦(yi)安用此(ci)长者(zhe)乎?
献县吏王(wang)(wang)某(mou)工(gong)刀笔,善巧取人财。然(ran)每(mei)有(you)所积,必有(you)一(yi)意外事(shi)耗去。有(you)城隍庙道(dao)童(tong),夜行廊庑间,有(you)二(er)吏持簿(bu)对算,其一(yi)曰(yue):渠今(jin)岁所蓄(xu)较(jiao)多,当(dang)何法以(yi)销(xiao)之(zhi)?方沉思间,其一(yi)曰(yue):一(yi)翠(cui)云足矣,无烦迂折也(ye)。是庙往往遇鬼,道(dao)童(tong)习见(jian)亦不(bu)(bu)怖(bu)。但不(bu)(bu)知(zhi)翠(cui)云为(wei)谁,亦不(bu)(bu)知(zhi)为(wei)谁销(xiao)算。俄(e)有(you)小妓翠(cui)云至,王(wang)(wang)某(mou)大嬖之(zhi),耗所蓄(xu)八九,又染(ran)恶疮,医药备至,比愈(yu)则已(yi)荡然(ran)矣。人计(ji)其平生所取,可屈指数者,约三四万(wan)金(jin),后发(fa)狂疾(ji)暴卒,竟无棺以(yi)殓(lian)。
陈云亭(ting)舍(she)人言,有台湾(wan)驿使宿馆舍(she),见(jian)艳(yan)女登墙(qiang)下窥,叱索无所睹。夜半琅(lang)然有声,乃片瓦(wa)掷枕(zhen)畔,叱问是何妖魅,敢侮天使。窗(chuang)外朗声曰:公(gong)禄命重,我避公(gong)不(bu)及,致(zhi)公(gong)叱索,惧干神谴,惴(zhui)惴(zhui)至今。今公(gong)睡(shui)中萌邪念,误(wu)作驿卒之女,谋(mou)他日纳为妾(qie)。人心一动,鬼神知之,以邪召邪,不(bu)得(de)而咎我,故(gu)投(tou)瓦(wa)相(xiang)报,公(gong)何怒(nu)焉(yan)?驿使大愧,未及天曙,促装去。
叶旅亭御史宅,忽有狐怪白昼对语,迫叶让所居,扰攘戏侮,至杯盘自舞,几榻自行。叶告张真人,真人以委法官。先书一符,甫张而裂,次牒都城隍,亦无验。法官曰:是必天狐,非拜章不可。乃建道场七日,至三日狐犹诟詈,至四日乃婉词请和。叶不欲与为难,亦祈不竟其事。真人曰:章已拜不可追矣。至七日忽闻格斗砰【石訇】,门窗破堕,薄暮尚未已,法官又檄他神相助,乃就擒,以罂贮之,埋广渠门外。余尝问真人驱役鬼神之故,曰:我亦不知所以然,但依法施行耳。大抵鬼神皆受役于印,而符录则掌于法官。真人如官长,法官如胥吏;真人非法官不能为符录,法官非真人之印,其符录亦不灵。中间有验有不验,则如各官司文移章奏,或准或驳,不能一一必行耳。此言颇近理,又问设空宅深山,猝遇精魅,君尚能制伏否,曰:譬大吏经行,劫盗自然避匿。倘或无知猖獗,突犯双旌,虽手握兵符,征调不及,一时亦无如之何。此言亦颇笃实。然则一切神奇之说,皆附会也。
