郑五,不(bu)知何许(xu)人,携母妻流(liu)寓(yu)河涧,以木(mu)工自(zi)给。病将死,嘱(zhu)其妻曰:我本(ben)无立锥(zhui)地(di),汝(ru)又拙于女红,度老母必以冻馁(nei)死,今与汝(ru)约(yue),有(you)能为我养母者(zhe),汝(ru)即嫁之,我死不(bu)恨(hen)也(ye)。妻如所约(yue),母藉(jie)以存活(huo)。或奉事(shi)稍怠,则室中(zhong)有(you)声,如碎磁(ci)折竹。一岁(sui)棉衣未成,母泣号(hao)寒,忽(hu)大声如钟鼓殷动墙(qiang)壁,如是七八年(nian),母死后乃寂。
佃户曹自(zi)立(li),粗识字,不(bu)能多(duo)也。偶患寒疾,昏愦中为一(yi)(yi)役引去,途遇一(yi)(yi)役,审为误(wu)拘(ju),互诟良久,俾送还(hai)。经过一(yi)(yi)处,以石(shi)为垣,周里许,其内(nei)浓(nong)烟坌(ben)涌(yong),紫焰赫然(ran),门额六字,巨如斗(dou),不(bu)能尽识。但记(ji)其点画(hua)而归,据所(suo)记(ji)偏旁推之,似(si)是负心(xin)背(bei)德之狱也。
世(shi)称殇子(zi)为(wei)债(zhai)鬼,是(shi)固有之(zhi)。卢南石言(yan),朱元亭一子(zi)病瘵,绵 时,呻吟自语曰(yue):是(shi)尚欠我十(shi)九(jiu)金。俄医者(zhe)(zhe)投以人参,煎(jian)成(cheng)未饮而逝。其(qi)价(jia)恰得(de)十(shi)九(jiu)金。此(ci)近日事(shi)也。或曰(yue)四(si)海之(zhi)中,一日之(zhi)内,殇子(zi)不知其(qi)凡几,前(qian)生(sheng)(sheng)埔(pu)负(fu)者(zhe)(zhe),安得(de)如许(xu)之(zhi)众?夫死生(sheng)(sheng)转毂,因果(guo)循环,如恒河之(zhi)沙,积数(shu)不可(ke)(ke)以测算;如太空之(zhi)云,变(bian)态不可(ke)(ke)以思议,是(shi)诚难(nan)拘一格。然计(ji)其(qi)大势,则(ze)冤愆纠结,生(sheng)(sheng)于(yu)财货者(zhe)(zhe)居多。老子(zi)曰(yue):天(tian)下(xia)攘(rang)攘(rang)皆(jie)为(wei)利(li)往,天(tian)下(xia)熙熙皆(jie)为(wei)利(li)来。人之(zhi)一生(sheng)(sheng),盖无不役志于(yu)是(shi)者(zhe)(zhe)。顾天(tian)地生(sheng)(sheng)财,只(zhi)有此(ci)数(shu)。此(ci)得(de)则(ze)彼失,此(ci)盈则(ze)彼亏。机械(xie)于(yu)是(shi)而生(sheng)(sheng),恩仇(chou)于(yu)是(shi)而起(qi),业(ye)缘报复,延及(ji)三生(sheng)(sheng)。观谋利(li)者(zhe)(zhe)之(zhi)多,可(ke)(ke)知索偿者(zhe)(zhe)之(zhi)不少矣(yi)。史迁有言(yan),怨毒之(zhi)于(yu)人,甚(shen)矣(yi)哉(zai)!君子(zi)宁信其(qi)有,或可(ke)(ke)发(fa)人深省(sheng)也。
里(li)妇新寡,狂且(qie)赂邻媪挑之,夜入其(qi)闼,阖扉将(jiang)寝(qin),忽灯(deng)光绿(lv)黯,缩小如豆,俄爆然一声,红焰四射(she),圆如二尺许(xu),大如镜。中(zhong)现人(ren)(ren)面,乃(nai)其(qi)故夫也(ye)(ye)。男女并然仆榻下,家(jia)人(ren)(ren)惊视,其(qi)事遂(sui)败。或疑嫠妇堕节者众,何以此(ci)鬼(gui)独有灵?余谓鬼(gui)有强弱,人(ren)(ren)有盛衰,此(ci)本强鬼(gui),又值二人(ren)(ren)之衰,故能为厉耳。其(qi)他茹恨黄泉,冤(yuan)缠数世者,不知凡几。非竟神随形灭也(ye)(ye)。或又疑妖物(wu)所凭(ping),作此(ci)变怪。是或有之,然妖不自兴,因人(ren)(ren)而(er)兴,亦(yi)幽魂怨毒之气,阴相感召(zhao),邪(xie)魅(mei)乃(nai)乘而(er)假(jia)借之。不然,陶婴(ying)之室,何未(wei)闻黎邱之鬼(gui)哉。
罗(luo)仰山通政(zheng),在礼曹时,为(wei)同(tong)官所(suo)(suo)轧,动辄掣(che)肘,步(bu)步(bu)如(ru)行荆(jing)棘中,性素迂滞,渐恚愤成(cheng)疾。一日(ri)郁郁枯坐,忽梦至一山,花放水流,风日(ri)清旷,觉神思开(kai)朗(lang),垒块顿(dun)消。沿溪(xi)散(san)步(bu),得(de)一茅舍,有(you)(you)老翁(weng)(weng)延入小(xiao)坐,言(yan)论颇洽(qia),老翁(weng)(weng)问何以(yi)有(you)(you)病容,罗(luo)具(ju)陈所(suo)(suo)苦。老翁(weng)(weng)太息曰:此(ci)有(you)(you)夙因(yin),君(jun)所(suo)(suo)未(wei)解。君(jun)七百年前为(wei)宋黄(huang)(huang)筌,某即南唐(tang)徐(xu)熙也。徐(xu)之(zhi)(zhi)画品(pin),本(ben)居黄(huang)(huang)上。黄(huang)(huang)恐夺供奉(feng)之(zhi)(zhi)宠(chong),巧词(ci)排抑(yi),使沉(chen)沦困顿(dun),衔恨以(yi)终。其(qi)(qi)(qi)后辗(zhan)转轮回,未(wei)能相遇,今世业缘凑合(he),乃得(de)一快其(qi)(qi)(qi)宿仇。彼之(zhi)(zhi)加于(yu)君(jun)者(zhe),即君(jun)之(zhi)(zhi)曾加于(yu)彼者(zhe)也,君(jun)又何憾焉。大(da)抵(di)无往(wang)(wang)不(bu)(bu)(bu)复者(zhe),天之(zhi)(zhi)道;有(you)(you)施必报者(zhe),人(ren)之(zhi)(zhi)情。既已种(zhong)因(yin),终当(dang)结(jie)果(guo)。其(qi)(qi)(qi)气机之(zhi)(zhi)感,如(ru)磁之(zhi)(zhi)引针(zhen),不(bu)(bu)(bu)近(jin)则已,近(jin)则吸而不(bu)(bu)(bu)解;其(qi)(qi)(qi)怨(yuan)毒(du)之(zhi)(zhi)结(jie),如(ru)石之(zhi)(zhi)含(han)火,不(bu)(bu)(bu)触则已,触则激而立(li)生(sheng)(sheng);其(qi)(qi)(qi)终不(bu)(bu)(bu)消释,如(ru)疾病之(zhi)(zhi)隐伏,必有(you)(you)骤发之(zhi)(zhi)日(ri);其(qi)(qi)(qi)终相遇合(he),如(ru)日(ri)月之(zhi)(zhi)旋转,必有(you)(you)交(jiao)会之(zhi)(zhi)缠。然则种(zhong)种(zhong)害人(ren)之(zhi)(zhi)术,适有(you)(you)自(zi)(zi)害而已矣。吾过去生(sheng)(sheng)中,与(yu)君(jun)有(you)(you)旧,因(yin)君(jun)未(wei)悟(wu),故为(wei)述忧患之(zhi)(zhi)由。君(jun)与(yu)彼已结(jie)果(guo)矣,自(zi)(zi)今以(yi)往(wang)(wang),慎(shen)勿造因(yin)可也。罗(luo)洒然有(you)(you)省,胜负之(zhi)(zhi)心顿(dun)尽(jin)。数(shu)日(ri)之(zhi)(zhi)内,宿疾全除。此(ci)余十许岁时,闻霍易书先生(sheng)(sheng)言(yan)。或曰:是卫(wei)公(gong)延璞事(shi),先生(sheng)(sheng)偶(ou)误(wu)记也。未(wei)知其(qi)(qi)(qi)审,皀附(fu)识之(zhi)(zhi)。
田白岩言(yan)(yan),康熙中江南有(you)征漕(cao)之案,官(guan)(guan)吏(li)伏(fu)法者数人(ren),数年后(hou)有(you)一人(ren)降(jiang)乩(ji),于其(qi)友人(ren)家,自言(yan)(yan)方(fang)在冥司讼某(mou)(mou)公。友人(ren)骇曰:某(mou)(mou)公循吏(li),且(qie)其(qi)总督(du)两江,在此案前十(shi)余年,何(he)(he)以(yi)无故(gu)讼之?乩(ji)又书曰:此案非(fei)一日之故(gu)矣。方(fang)其(qi)初萌(meng),褫一官(guan)(guan),窜(cuan)流一二吏(li),即可(ke)消患于未萌(meng)。某(mou)(mou)公博忠厚之名(ming),养痈不(bu)(bu)(bu)治,久而溃裂,吾辈遂逅其(qi)难。吾辈病民蛊国,不(bu)(bu)(bu)能仇现在之执法者也(ye)。追原(yuan)祸本,不(bu)(bu)(bu)某(mou)(mou)公之讼而谁讼欤?书讫,乩(ji)遂不(bu)(bu)(bu)动,迄不(bu)(bu)(bu)知九幽之下,定谳(yan)如(ru)何(he)(he)。金(jin)人(ren)铭曰:捐捐不(bu)(bu)(bu)壅(yong),终为江河,毫末(mo)不(bu)(bu)(bu)札,将寻斧柯(ke),古(gu)圣人(ren)所见远矣。此鬼所言(yan)(yan),要不(bu)(bu)(bu)为无理也(ye)。
里有(you)姜某者将死,嘱其妇勿嫁。妇泣诺,后(hou)(hou)有(you)艳妇之色者,以重价购为妾。方(fang)靓妆登车(che),所(suo)蓄犬忽人立怒号,两(liang)爪抱持啮妇面,裂其鼻(bi)淮,并盲其一目(mu),妇容既毁,买者委之去。后(hou)(hou)亦更无觊觎者。此康(kang)熙甲午乙(yi)未间事,故老(lao)尚(shang)有(you)目(mu)睹者。皆曰:义(yi)哉(zai)此犬,爱主人以德(de);智哉(zai)此犬,能(neng)攻(gong)病之本。余(yu)谓犬断不(bu)能(neng)见及(ji)此,此其亡夫厉鬼所(suo)凭(ping)也。
爱堂先(xian)生(sheng),尝饮酒(jiu)夜归,马(ma)忽惊逸,草树翳荟(hui),沟塍凹(ao)凸,几蹶者三四(si),俄(e)有人自道左出,一手挽(wan)辔,一手掖之下,曰(yue):老母昔蒙(meng)拯(zheng)济,今救君断骨之厄也(ye)。问其(qi)姓名,转瞬(shun)已失所在(zai)矣。先(xian)生(sheng)自忆生(sheng)平未有是事(shi),不知鬼何以云然,佛经所谓(wei)无心布施(shi),功德最大者欤(yu)。
张(zhang)福(fu)(fu)(fu),杜(du)林镇人也,以负(fu)贩为业,一日与(yu)里豪(hao)争路,豪(hao)挥扑推(tui)堕(duo)(duo)石桥下。时河冰(bing)方结,觚棱如(ru)锋刃,颅骨(gu)破裂(lie),仅奄奄存一息。里婿故早豪(hao),遽(ju)闻(wen)于(yu)官(guan)(guan),官(guan)(guan)利其财,狱颇急(ji)。福(fu)(fu)(fu)阴遣(qian)母谓豪(hao)曰(yue):君偿我命,与(yu)我何益。能(neng)为我养老(lao)母幼(you)子,则乘(cheng)(cheng)我未绝,我到(dao)官(guan)(guan)言失(shi)足堕(duo)(duo)桥下。豪(hao)诺之(zhi)(zhi),福(fu)(fu)(fu)粗(cu)知字义(yi),尚能(neng)忍痛自书(shu)(shu)状。生供凿(zao)凿(zao),官(guan)(guan)吏无(wu)如(ru)何也。福(fu)(fu)(fu)死之(zhi)(zhi)后,豪(hao)竟(jing)负(fu)约(yue)。其母屡控于(yu)官(guan)(guan),终以生供有(you)据,不能(neng)直,豪(hao)后乘(cheng)(cheng)醉夜行,亦马蹶堕(duo)(duo)桥死。皆曰(yue):是(shi)负(fu)福(fu)(fu)(fu)之(zhi)(zhi)报矣(yi)。先姚(yao)安公曰(yue):甚哉(zai)(zai)治狱之(zhi)(zhi)难(nan)也,而命案尤难(nan)。有(you)顶凶者(zhe),甘(gan)为人代死;有(you)贿和者(zhe),甘(gan)鬻其所亲(qin)。斯(si)已猝不易诘矣(yi),至于(yu)被(bei)杀之(zhi)(zhi)人,手书(shu)(shu)供状云非是(shi)人之(zhi)(zhi)所杀,此虽皋陶听之(zhi)(zhi),不能(neng)入其罪(zui)也。倘非负(fu)约(yue)不偿,致遭鬼殛,则竟(jing)以财免矣(yi)。讼(song)情万变,何所不有(you)!司刑(xing)者(zhe)可(ke)据理率(lv)断哉(zai)(zai)!
姚安公言,有孙天(tian)球者,以财为(wei)(wei)(wei)命(ming),徒(tu)手(shou)积累至千金(jin)(jin),虽妻子冻(dong)饿(e),视如(ru)陌路,亦(yi)自忍冻(dong)饿(e),不(bu)(bu)轻用一(yi)钱。病(bing)革(ge)时(shi),陈所积于(yu)枕前(qian),一(yi)一(yi)手(shou)自抚(fu)摩(mo),曰:尔竟非我有乎?呜咽而(er)(er)殁。孙未殁以前(qian),为(wei)(wei)(wei)狐所嬲。每摄其(qi)财货去,使窘急欲(yu)死,乃(nai)于(yu)他所复得(de)之,如(ru)是者不(bu)(bu)一(yi)。又有刘某(mou)者,亦(yi)以财为(wei)(wei)(wei)命(ming),亦(yi)为(wei)(wei)(wei)狐所嬲,一(yi)岁除夕,凡刘亲友之贫(pin)者,悉馈数金(jin)(jin)。讶不(bu)(bu)类其(qi)平日(ri)所为(wei)(wei)(wei),旋闻刘床前(qian)私箧为(wei)(wei)(wei)狐盗去二百余金(jin)(jin),而(er)(er)得(de)谢柬(jian)数十纸。盖孙财乃(nai)辛苦所得(de),狐怪其(qi)悭啬,特戏之而(er)(er)已(yi)。刘财多由机巧剥削而(er)(er)来,故狐竟散之。其(qi)处置(zhi)也顾(gu)得(de)宜也。
余督学闽中时,幕友钟忻湖言,其友昔在某公幕,因会勘,宿古寺中。月色朦胧,见某公窗下有人影,徘徊良久,冉冉上钟楼去,心知为鬼魅,然素有胆,竟蹑往寻之。至则楼门锁闭,楼上似有二人语。其一曰:君何以空返?其一曰:此地罕有官吏至,今幸两官共宿,将俟人静讼吾冤。顷窃听所言,非揣摩迎合之方,即消弭弥缝之术,是不足以办吾事。故废然返。语毕,似有太息声,再听之,竟寂然矣。次日,阴先主人,果变色摇手,戒勿多事。迄不知其何冤也。余谓此君友,有早于主人,故造斯言,形容其巧于趋避,为鬼揶俞耳。若就此一事而论,鬼非目睹,语未耳闻,恍惚杳冥,茫无实据。虽阎罗包老,亦无可措手,顾乃责之于某公乎?
